defne dilsiz

Defne Dilsiz

Defne has found herself in California by way of Turkey/Maryland/New York/Colorado. She first tried climbing in New York in 2020 and, within the blink of an eye, left her life in New York City to drive out West, in search of bigger rocks. She fell in love with the duality of climbing—how we find ourselves grunting and sweating in some of the most serene and meditative places. Defne spent her most recent Fall volunteering as a Climber Steward in Yosemite Valley, and is an active member of the Joshua Tree Search and Rescue Team. When she is not climbing, Defne can be found hiking long distances, reading, and asking to pet your dog. She believes in the power of climbing and it’s community.

Matt Lounsbury

Matt Lounsbury

Matt Lounsbury grew up under beautiful night skies in rural Vermont. He has spent his life pursuing beauty, nature and adventure. After studying fine Art glass blowing at Hartwick College, Matt spent 17 years working as a naturalist and outdoor guide. While working in places such as Alaska, California, Belize, and Costa Rica, Matt developed a passion for teaching people about the wonders of the natural world. An important point that sparked increased interest in the night sky occurred at sea. While crossing the Atlantic Matt was struck by an endless unimpeded night sky with 1,000s of miles to the nearest light pollution and bioluminescence in the water below. Since that trip Matt pursued increasing study into the history of celestial navigation and the knowledge that humanity recieves from our distant universe. Matthew has been regularly guiding backpacking and rock climbing in Joshua Tree since 2008 and in 2017 made it his forever home. He is currently studying towards a masters in Physics education.

makar shpilenok

Makar Shpilenok

Makar grew up in a small village called Chukhrai in the remote wilderness of Russia. To pass his time, he would wander the isolated forests surrounding his home and learn about the environment – this is how he discovered his love for the natural world. When he came to the United States for high school, he decided to join his school climbing team; he would compete in high school climbing competitions for four years. Once Makar graduated high school, he started climbing outdoors, and it took him to places all over the world with the most magnificent scenery: from the rugged High Sierra range to the fierce volcanoes of Russia, to the remote peaks of Canada, to unforgiving mountains of Colorado, and to the unclimbed cliffs of Mongolia. Makar wanted to share his experience with others and wanted to give people the skills necessary to be able to access all of the same beautiful landscapes that he adores so much. Makar got certified as an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor. As a climbing guide, he was able to express his love for nature and his passion for climbing while also sharing it with other people.
